Udalatx is one of the main summits of Montes del Duranguesado, and thus, of Euskadi. The mountain presents a very different profile depending whether we are approaching the summit climbing from the South face (moderate), the North Face (steep and slippery grassy corridors) or the NW-SE ridge. Additionally, Udalatx provides us with an exceptional look-out of Anboto peak, the main summit of the region.

Arriving to Barrio de Udala, close to Arrasate/Mondragón, we park the car at the parking place close to the restaurant. The parking place is small, and being Udalatx the main mountain of the area, it might be interesting to arrive early before parking spots get full.

We start walking from the parking space, going through a small park and following a small path towards West. The path climbs up through an holm oak forest, quickly gaining elevation.

After a few hundred meters of ascent, the Holm oak trees disappear, the path gets narrower, and the limestone rock surfaces over the grass. Some easy climbing might be required, but, unless the rock is wet, the limestone rocks offer good grip to make it safe.

From the South hillside, we get amazing views of Deba Valley and Arrasate/Mondragón city. In winter time, fog is usual at Ebro's Valley and Llanura Alavesa because of the thermal inversion with anticyclonic weather, but skies at this part of Euskadi stay clear.

The path turns towards SE hillside to ascend using the wide ridge of Udalatx.

From the top of the ridge we get privileged views towards Txindoki, Aizkorri mountain range and even Beriain/San Donato with clear skies.

Before reaching the foresummit, a wide corridor shelter us from the wind.

In the foresummit, you can find a small lookout and this poem in basque language. //

The real summit of Udalatx is the one in front of us, to climb to the summit we have to overcome some easy climbing (F/II). Be careful with wet rock.

From the summit, we get awesome views of the ridge between Alluitz and Anboto, for me, one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in Euskadi.

Once the climbing has been overcome, we walk on the ridge towards the true summit of Udalatx, where we get a 360 degrees views of most of the mountains of Euskadi region.

The final ridge before reaching Udalatx // Detalle de la Arista final
Towards North, views to Ibaizabal valley (Durango) and mount Oiz (which we climbed in the past) // Hacia el norte, vistas privilegiadas del Valle de Ibaizabal (Durango) y Monte Oiz.

Detail of the final ridge we have to walk to reach the summit, be careful when the rock is wet.

I never get bored of looking at Anboto and Arrazola valley // Las vistas hacia el Anboto y Arrazola son espectaculares

Latxas sheeps close to the cliff on the North face of Udalatx.

We descended using the W. ridge, where we can choose either using the ridge or descend through the hillside. The track posted summits the first peaks on the ridge and then descends through the hillsides to reach home earlier. After a few hundreds meters after Udalatx summit it might be worth to visit Koba Haundi, a small limestone cavern on the hillside of Udalatx.

After descending the hillside we quickly found a path used by the local shepherds which will lead to Besaide, the meeting point of the three Euskadi's regions  (Álava, Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia).

After a break at Besaide, we continue using the GR path (red and white marks) which will lead to Udala Auzoa, back where we parked the car. On the way to Udala we will walk through a forest of oaks and beech trees and we can visit and old lime oven.
